Woman charged with DUI following crash that killed 2

An alleged drunk driving incident that occurred north of Norman, Oklahoma, near Tinker Air Force Base on March 28 claimed two lives and left cars and debris scattered for nearly a hundred yards along the roadway, according to media sources. One member of the Oklahoma City Police Department said that the driver believed to have caused the fatal collision appeared to be intoxicated. She is now facing two counts of manslaughter in addition to charges of DUI and reckless driving.

The mid-day crash happened on Douglas Boulevard just minutes after a witness called 911 to report a reckless driver weaving in and out of oncoming traffic. Another witness told news reporters that the allegedly impaired driver was traveling faster than she needed to be at the time of the accident. The witness added that he did not notice the sound of squealing brakes or other signs that the woman had tried to stop her vehicle prior to the crash.

News sources indicate that the driver may have suffered contusions in the wreck and that two 52-year-old men were killed. Few other details about the incident were immediately available. The charged woman, who was detained for attacking her husband with a stapler in December 2013, remained in police custody at press time.

Norman residents who find themselves facing drunk driving charges may find that penalties for impaired driving in Oklahoma are harsh. In some cases, however, a DUI defense attorney may be able to identify deficiencies in the prosecution's case, which could lead to a reduction or dismissal of the charges. If the prosecution's evidence appears solid, the attorney could help a charged driver pursue actions that might improve their position in court. Participation in an alcohol treatment program or counseling could put an individual charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in a better position to successfully negotiate reduced DUI penalties in some situations.
