Oklahoma woman causes crash with child in the vehicle

A police officer witnessed a woman allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol on Sept. 5 at 1050 North Lynn Riggs Boulevard in Claremore. According to the officer, she drove into the parking lot of an IBC Bank after running over a curb and driving through a grassy area. After coming to a stop in the grass, the officer said the car started moving again, and it hit a light pole.

When the officer made contact with the woman, she reportedly had a blank stare on her face and would not turn off the car. He then got the woman to unroll her window so he could remove a child from the back seat before turning off the car himself. During an attempt to speak to the woman, she reportedly had slurred speech and could barely keep her eyes open.

She admitted to drinking scotch and taking three to four muscle relaxers before getting into the car. The woman also said that she didn't remember the accident. After being taken into custody, she was charged with DUI and child endangerment and was held on bond of $51,000. An ambulance that was called to the scene checked on the woman, and the child was not reported as hurt.

Those who are facing drunk driving charges could face time in jail, a fine and a license suspension. Probation and community service are other penalties that drivers may face. Talking to a DUI defense attorney may make it possible to dispute such charges in court. However, everyone has the right to defend themselves in court if they desire. In court, it may be possible to argue that the car suffered from a mechanical problem or that statements reportedly made to police were inaccurately quoted in a police report.
