NEW LAW: Anti-Meth Law Takes Effect 2013

A new law went into effect on January 1st of 2013 that further constrains the ability to gain access to medications that lead to the manufacture of methamphetamine. Actually passed last year, the measure is designed to add onto the in-state tracking system of over the counter pseudoephedrine sales by adding to a growing multi state network.

Last year, in order to purchase pseudoephedrine, many Oklahoma residents would drive to neighboring states, beyond the reach of the Oklahoma pharmacy registration system, and purchase what they needed to manufacture meth. This could be done in multiple states and there would virtually be no paper trail. According to Oklahoma Board of Narcotics spokesman Mark Woodward, this known method was a major factor in bringing about this multi state system.

Now, this loophole is closed and the number of meth labs reported in Oklahoma should continue to drop. According to Woodward, the initiation of the in-state system in 2004 caused more than 95% of meth labs in Oklahoma to be eliminated. However, in 2008, a new method of cooking meth was discovered by state officials and has since gain popularity. The so-called "shake and bake" or "one pot" manufacturing process requires much less equipment and is thus much more difficult to find and eradicate.

Feedback on the new law from drug stores has mostly been positive. Pharmacists want to be able to legally provide the medication to people who truly need it and at the same time do not want to contribute to illicit use. This new law takes much of stress of the situation from pharmacists and allows quick access to prior purchasing information on the person attempting to buy pseudoephedrine.

Methamphetamine is a severely addicting and devastating drug. Even though no one wants to be arrested, an arrest at the early stages of addiction can save your life. A competent criminal defense attorney can guide you through the complicated legal process so that you can get the help you need and get your life back.
