Former Oklahoma basketball star charged after fatal accident

A former standout player for the University of Oklahoma basketball team was badly injured in a car accident late last month and was recently charged in connection with the incident, which left a woman dead.

Authorities said 46-year-old Mookie Blaylock, who went on to have an NBA career with the New Jersey Nets, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks, was involved in an accident in late May in which his SUV swerved across a median in suburban Atlanta.

Blaylock's vehicle struck a van. A woman who was a passenger in that van was killed.

Blaylock has now been charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree, failure to maintain a lane and driving on a suspended license.

His attorney has claimed that Blaylock had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the accident. Rather, the attorney said, he had a seizure that caused him to lose control of his vehicle. The attorney believes this fatal car accident should be seen as an unfortunate, unavoidable situation and not a criminal act.

Until all the facts are known and a trial has been had, we will not know if Blaylock's attorney is correct.

Whatever the case, we hope the family of the deceased woman has been able to arrange for legal representation, too. Our legal system works best when opposing sides both have representation that knows how to craft a legal argument and can offer effective advocacy.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman at the time. Whatever else is true, it cannot be denied that her untimely passing has come as a saddening shock to her loved ones.
