Oklahoma mother driving with 3-year-old daughter charged with DUI

According to a news report, a 38-year-old Oklahoma woman is facing multiple DUI and child endangerment charges. According to police reports, about 11 p.m. on July 26, Oklahoma City police were responding to a report of a possible intoxicated driver in the area of Drexel and South West 128th Street. The woman's ex-husband had made the report and was following her.

When he lost track of the woman, he phoned police. Officers located the woman and stopped her nearby. When they did, the police allegedly smelled the odor of alcohol on her breath and observed that her eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officers also noticed a child in the back seat of the car. The woman apparently admitted to the officers that she had been drinking for about two hours.

Police say the mother agreed to take field sobriety tests. During the testing, the officer performing the test apparently observed her lack of eye control. At one point, according to the report, she began to cry and said, "If you're going to take me to jail, just do it." Her daughter was released to her ex-husband.

Oklahoma's penalties for DUI offenses are serious. The results can be life changing. A person, if convicted of such charges, faces the loss many privileges including the right to drive. Also, time behind bars, loss of employment, and the loss of child custody are a real possibility. The most thoughtful course of action for an Oklahoman facing similar charges is to seek the counsel of an attorney experienced in criminal defense. A qualified attorney may be able to help by ensuring that their client is treated fairly throughout the entire process. In the event of a possible conviction, an attorney may also be able to argue on behalf of their client for a reduced charge or lesser penalties.
