Oklahoma woman accused of DUI following crash

On Aug. 9 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a bicyclist was hit and killed in a crash that occurred on N.W. 10th Street in Oklahoma City. Police believe that the cyclist was riding in the outside lane when he was struck by a 37-year-old woman driving a Yukon. Witnesses observed that the lights on the bike were on following the crash.

The driver told police that she did not see the cyclist prior to the accident. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police claim that the woman was unsteady on her feet when they encountered her and that there was an odor of alcohol. The woman was given a field sobriety test, which she allegedly did not pass. It was not stated whether she took a blood or breath test. However, the woman now faces a felony DUI charge.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Oklahoma County Detention Center. She is charged with DUI and manslaughter. It was not stated whether she will be permitted to post bail. The identity of the bicyclist was not released.

A person who was accused of a crime for which jail is a possibility has a right to be represented by a competent criminal defense attorney. An attorney may have the ability to remain at the accused person's side throughout the entire process, starting at the initial appearance. It might be possible to argue for release on bail in some situations. It might sometimes be possible for an attorney to negotiate a plea bargain with the prosecution to allow a more favorable resolution for the accused. An attorney may also have the ability to review all of the evidence to determine the best defense to present to a jury in the event the case ends up going to court.
