Former NFL player gets DUI charges after traffic stop

A traffic stop in Oklahoma on Sept. 2 led to drunk driving charges for a former NFL player. Former Detroit Lion Ronnell Lewis was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after an early morning traffic stop. A police spokesperson said that officers saw Lewis's truck cross the center line while driving on Main Street in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Police reportedly smelled alcohol. They also claimed to see a six-pack of beer with one can missing in the truck.

Lewis was also taken into police custody in April after a bar fight. Police used a stun gun on him twice while subduing him. Lewis pleaded no contest to disturbing the peace and public intoxication, and he received a six-month deferred sentence. The Lions released him in late August. Lewis's agent said that the football player cooperated with police and that he had not been charged.

If convicted of drunk driving charges, Lewis could face a loss of driving privileges, probation, fines and even time in jail. Although drunk driving charges are serious, convictions are not automatic. In this case, Lewis has the right to defend himself in order to avoid a conviction or face reduced charges and penalties.

An criminal defense attorney with drunk driving experience could help a person facing similar charges. The attorney could analyze the details of the charges, including the events leading up to the arrest, any tests performed by the police officers and the accused's prior criminal record. The attorney could prepare and present a defense, question witnesses and introduce evidence. If a conviction can't be avoided, the attorney may negotiate a plea deal.
