Oklahoma woman charged with DUI, child endangerment

A 26-year-old Oklahoma City woman was taken into custody on June 1 on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a minor and driving under the influence of alcohol. Police say she was also involved in a hit-and-run accident while driving drunk with a child in her vehicle. The woman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, child endangerment and DUI.

Police say they pulled the woman over on the northwest side of Oklahoma City after responding to the scene of a hit-and-run accident. The woman's car was said to have matched the description of the hit-and-run vehicle. Officers claim they detected the odor of alcohol on the woman's breath when they approached her vehicle. They also say the woman admitted that she had consumed a 40-ounce beer before driving. The woman reportedly had difficulty maintaining her balance after exiting her vehicle.

Officers reported that the woman refused to submit to a breath test to measure her blood alcohol level, and they elected not to ask her to perform any field sobriety tests due to her condition. A young girl discovered in the rear of the vehicle was subsequently placed in the custody of a female relative. The woman was then transported to the Oklahoma County Jail.

Penalties for driving under the influence can be severe in Oklahoma, and even first-time offenders could be sentenced to up to one year in jail. A criminal defense attorney may seek to mitigate the consequences of a drunk driving charge during discussions with the prosecutor involved. They may point out the prior good conduct of their client, or they could question the statements and actions of the police officers involved. An attorney may also dispute the results of toxicology tests if they were not performed according to strict guidelines.
