Woman charged with DUI following high-speed chase

A 27-year-old woman who led troopers on a high-speed chase during rush hour was driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. She is now scheduled to appear in court to answer to numerous charges including DUI, speeding, eluding police and transporting an open container. The woman was also charged with not having her driver's license with her when she was stopped.

The incident giving rise to the charges reportedly occurred on Aug. 13 in Tulsa when troopers attempted to stop the woman for speeding. When the woman refused to stop, troopers pursued her vehicle as it sped along Creek Turnpike, Highway 160 and Interstate 44. Troopers report that the woman waved at them during the chase, and they were finally able to stop her at Peoria as she exited the highway.

Once stopped, the woman allegedly admitted to the troopers that she had consumed half a pint of vodka. Upon investigation, officials allegedly located an open vodka container on the vehicle floor along with the spilled contents of a mixed drink.

When a traffic stop leads to interactions with an individual suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, law enforcement officers are permitted to conduct field tests designed and required to confirm this initial suspicion. Other indicators of possible intoxication may be taken into consideration as well, such as open containers in full view inside the stopped vehicle. However, the manner in which testing is conducted and other evidence is collected in the field must conform to the protocols set forth in Oklahoma state law.

When defending against DUI charges, a driver may wish to speak with an attorney. In some cases, he or she may mount a challenge on behalf of their client if deficiencies are found.
